"Noughts and Crosses" Malorie Blackman

Noughts and Crosses is a strange tale that really encaptures the readers emotions and makes the reader feel similiar to the characters. It uses a first person view point that alternates between the two main characters Sephy and Callum. The book deals with issues that are reflected in modern day society but which in a way are also very far fetched. Issues include Racism, Hope, Love, Hate and throughout the novel the theme of equality is broadcasted.

When i read this book i found it to be the most emotionally challenging book i have read in a long time, it pulls at the heartstrings and challenges the views and beliefs that are society is based on.

Themes such as Racism are broadcasted in the 21st century and portray the higher class of citizens "crosses" and the lower class of citizens "noughts". The book shows the love between the two main characters and highlights their fight against a world that was opposite to them ulitimately ending in tradgedy and death. With a background of social appearances and politics it also looks at how society is dictated by the few with classical views. Many readers and other analysis's have said that the book mimicks its famous counterpart "Romeo and Juliet" however i believe that this is not true, however the book just deals with similiar issues such as segregation and the hope of something better.

The book has been described as:

"a book which will linger in the mind long after it has been read and which will challenge children to think again about the cliches and stereotypes with wich they are presented"
